3G networking has been something of a slow burner over the years, largely because it took mobile hardware so long to catch up and to unlock the potential offered by this now widely available service. While there may be a good deal of hype surrounding next-gen 4G networking, 3G is still more than adequate if you want to experience the new age for internet browsing through mobile phones. 3G has enabled the creation of mobile broadband services, online gaming from your handset, video calling, app downloading and much more, so it deserves plenty of praise.
3G international roll-out began over a decade ago, but the mobile phones of the time were hampered by small screens, low display resolutions and limited input options as a result of physical keypads. Smartphones gradually began to emerge to make a better job of utilising 3G. Moreover, the Nokia N Series and RIM BlackBerry ranges brought better media and emailing capabilities to the table.
However, web browsing was still underwhelming, in part due to hardware limitations but also as a result of a dearth of mobile-optimised websites. Endless scrolling and fiddly navigation meant that things needed to change if internet browsing through mobile phones was to compete with the fixed line browsing experience or the cable services in my area.
Few would disagree that the Apple iPhone’s launch in 2007 was the first point at which there was a phone with the right components to squeeze a desktop browsing experience onto a modestly sized mobile. However, since Apple neglected to include 3G networking capabilities in this first iteration it would be another year until high speed mobile internet could combine with a device capable of making web browsing really work whilst on the move.
The key element which the iPhone perfected and upon which subsequent handsets from rival manufacturers have expanded was the way in which users could interact with websites loaded over a 3G connection. While mobile optimised sites are growing in number, many people are still forced to look at the desktop version of the site on their handset. However, with the prevalence of touch screen technology in modern handsets it is easy to swipe around a page, use pinch-to-zoom to enhance an element of text or an image and to re-orient the site using the internal accelerometers.
The most advanced mobile browsers are now compatible with key technologies including HTML5 and Flash. This means that you can enjoy rich media content and the interactive elements of websites on your handset. 3G can even match the cable services in my area and elsewhere when it comes to providing video streaming from sites such as YouTube.
More recently, the mobile internet browsing experience has become still more accessible thanks to the gradual increase in average handset display sizes and resolution. With improved screen real estate and higher pixel densities, text is ever clearer and images are largely free from fuzz. The iPhone range has retained its 3.5 inch diagonal screen size but the introduction of the Retina Display on the iPhone 4 in 2010 meant that the resolution was given a much-needed boost. Meanwhile, Android and Windows Phone handsets have a wide selection of large displays on offer, from the 4.3 inch screen of the Motorola Razr to the 4.65 and 4.7 inch screens of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and HTC Titan respectively.
With web pages increasingly optimised for modern phones with 3G connections and large touchscreen displays, it is easier than ever before to surf the web without a laptop or PC. In many ways, the lack of physical buttons or a mouse and keyboard setup gives you a far more tactile, engaging experience when accessing sites. This is something upon which tablet devices such as the iPad have capitalised, allowing web users to experience the information on the internet as if it were housed in a traditional printed publication, but with the flexibility of a digital format accessed via 3G networking.
It seems that 3G internet will continue to be a common feature of the mobile internet market for the foreseeable future, given that 4G roll-out is still somewhat limited.

Answer – depends on what you want from your cable service provider. Time Warner cable internet (and TV, the package is a whole-deal kind of thing) is best for some users, while The Dish is better for others.

Nice to sit on the fence, isn’t it. But of course the kind of question that asks whether one service is better than another – unless it is being asked by representatives of one or the other service, in which case it’s just meaningless advertising – requires a person to sit on that fence and have a good long look at both fields.

So let’s start with Time Warner. The Time Warner cable internet and TV package (which also includes digital telephony) is absolutely ideal for people who want convenience, one bill for everything, and a way to communicate through what is effectively a single hub. So if you never use your home phone, maybe it’s not so effective for you. Everyone has mobile phones these days: how many times have you ever taken a call on your home number?

That said, if your home phone is free to use then you may use it a lot to make calls. So Time Warner cable internet and TV and phone becomes a better idea again.

The Dish has opted to target a different market than Time Warner, Comcast and all the other triple play advocates. The Dish provides TV. Ergo, if you are happy with your existing computer and phone setup and don’t want the hassle of cancelling contracts before you can pull in a triple play offer from Time Warner or similar, The Dish is probably a better option – in that, as a standalone TV service, it sells itself as offering more TV for the money.

Don’t forget, before we go further, that coverage is of paramount importance in any decision about which cable TV company to use. If you can’t get The Dish, you can’t have The Dish. And if you can’t get Time Warner, you can’t have Time Warner.

You can easily Google coverage for your selected provider to check that you will get the signal you want. Not many of the company websites show their own coverage, or if they do they don’t advertise the fact very week – so just type in something like “Time Warner cable internet coverage” and see what you get back.

The kinds of programmes you will get for your money may sway your decision too. Do your research before you choose one provider or the other. Most companies carry most channels – certainly when you buy their most expensive packages – but you need to be clever about which you go for when you buy anything other than the top viewing bundle, or you’ll end up having to pay extra to watch your favourite shows and movie channels.

Don’t forget to compare the price of additional boxes as well. If your chosen provider charges you per box per TV and you have several units, your monthly price could increase dramatically.

So what’s our conclusion? Time Warner cable internet and digital TV has plenty to recommend it for the customer who likes to have everything controlled by one bill. The Dish is great for people who just want a TV provider. Here we are, still sitting on the fence!

You may want to find a tech savvy friend to help you with some of these steps. So when you think to yourself what are the internet options in my area? you should contact your internet provider to find out what internet options are available in your area. You may have dial-up (a very slow connection), DSL (Digital Subscriber Line – a bit faster than dial-up), satellite (slow upload, faster batch download) or a cable modem connection (also known as broadband, the fastest option available). After installing your best option, you can improve the speed of your internet experience with a few free steps.
Conduct a speed test to see if your upload and download speeds is comparable to what you’re supposed to get for your connection. Speedtest.net has free tests you conduct through your web browser.

Eliminate needless programs and web browser plug-ins to speed up both your computer and your web browser. There are a lot of programs loading every time your computer starts up. These almost always result in an icon in the lower left hand toolbar of your computer screen. You can click on some of them and adjust the settings to not load every time you start your computer. Other programs you may just have to exit; the auto load function can be a little harder to adjust without uninstalling the program altogether. There may be some programs you don’t use anymore, so uninstall them and you can greatly improve your computer speed.
In your web browser, disable any plug-ins/add-ins that you aren’t using; they suck up your connection bandwidth. This applies to tool bar add-ins as well, and you may need to actually remove the programs from your computer entirely using the Control Panel to get rid of them.

Increase your browser’s cache; this is the memory that the browser uses to store files for web pages you frequently visit. By increasing the memory of this temporary cache, you cause the pages you visit frequently to simply reload from memory instead of downloading the entire page from the internet again.
Turn off automatic subscriptions to things like podcasts, RSS feeds and software updates while you’re browsing to increase your speed too. You can turn these back on when you’re done surfing.
Finally, timing is everything – don’t download large files during peak internet usage times, typically mid-morning to mid-afternoon.

This is a guest post by Spencer Hogg from the website Broadband Expert where you can compare high speed internet providers in your area.

Security is a major concern for Internet users and system administrators. Whether to protect confidential data and information in individual files, lock a computer system to unauthorised users, control access to an intranet or an extranet, or conduct business on the Internet, one need to determine an appropriate level of Internet Security Issues and the effective means to achieve the objectives. The threat to Internet security is one of the main barriers to electronic transaction via the Internet medium. With the current popularity and the potential profits of electronic business, many executives face a conflict situation.

That is, connecting to the Internet and expanding their business would lead to risks and threats of intrusion. On the other hand, remaining disconnected from the Internet would sacrifice their customer contact and services to their competitors. We still all needs to be concern with all matters related to internet security issues as it affects us all in some way or the other.

The Internet uses simple mail transfer protocol (SMTP) to transmit electronic mail and most business transactions. These transmissions have as much privacy as a postcard and travel over insecure, un-trusted lines. Anyone anywhere along the transmission path can obtain access to a message and read the contents with a simple text viewer or word processing program. Because the transmission lines are insecure, it is easy to forge e-mail or use another person’s name. Theft of identity is becoming the nation’s leading incidence of fraud. A person can even claim that someone else sent a message, for example, to cancel an order or avoid paying an invoice.

Organisations in both the public and the private sectors are aware of the needs of Internet security. It is interesting to know how both sectors take action to protect their Internet data and corporate systems. The best way to keep an intruder from entering the network is to provide a security wall between the intruder and the corporate network. Since the intruders enter the network through a software program, such as a virus or worm etc., or a direct connection, firewalls, data encryption, and user authentication can restrain a hacker to some extent.

More and more companies are experiencing the power of marketing online. In the past, only a few businesses were capable of paying for expensive web development services. They’ve put up websites to showcase their products and services in the World Wide Web. But as time progressed, enterprises began to see how such investment can bring in more profit. It’s fast, it’s easy and the ROI or return of investment is pretty evident! Actually, there are now a lot of good website designers and developers who charge less for the same professional web design and customer friendly web interface.

What’s good about internet marketing is that it has a very wide range. It’s not only marketing done in websites but also includes marketing done through email or wireless media. It encompasses advertising, design, sales, SEO or search engine optimization and even the use of Web 2.0 tactics. Now how will this kind of marketing benefit companies?

1. The Target Market

Setting a target market is never a problem with internet marketing. It doesn’t matter whether you are aiming for the world or just a specific locality. Internet marketing gives you that power to choose your viewers. You can make your ads or your website viewable by the entire world or if you want to conquer only the local market, then that’s also doable.

2. Affordability

Internet marketing is relatively cheaper than radio or television advertising. There are many ways to increase profitability online without investing too much. There are even free sites that you can use to advertise your company. You can set up a free blog site, ask reliable writers to provide you quality content and promote your products and services from there. It’s definitely more affordable than paying for a 30-sec ad production and a 30-sec airtime on a TV or radio network.

3. Better Advertising

When people pick up the phone at home and realize they’re speaking with telemarketers, they simply say “No” & put the phone down. Promotional letters sent via snail mail aren’t really cost effective. But with internet marketing, advertisements aren’t really thrown away. The fact that people sit down to use their computers means that they have the time to browse around and discover whatever on the net. In fact, they have the power to choose what they want to see — which is why Pay per Click ads exists. Advertising online maximizes your finances as a businessman and makes sure that you’re able to reach the right people.

4. Speed

With the use of internet marketing strategies, you should be able to see and analyze your business’ progress in fast and efficient ways. You can easily check your website traffic for a certain time frame. You can check your search engine rankings to see how much potential you have. The result of these analytics can tell you if you’re doing well or if there’s anything you need to change in your marketing plan. And the good news is, you can apply these changes ASAP.

5. Customer Feedback

There’s one reason why people use the internet — convenience. People shop and bank online to save time and energy. And as long as you target the right market, satisfy your customers through fast and reliable service online, you’ll keep the cash flowing in. You won’t only have regular customers but have new ones every now and then.

Blogs have to be informative, and online markets demand information before they’ll buy products. The process of online marketing is quite different from the conventional marketing techniques, and blogging is an art in itself. If you can put the two together well, your blog will be a good marketing vehicle. A blog is at its best with great content as the saying goes “Content is King” how many time we hear it? The internet is a great place to Market any products or services it is access by millions daily and that figure is increasing everyday.

The blogging perspective for online marketing

A blog is a good marketing too, provided it’s an efficient, productive blog. Blogs need to maintain a stream of good quality current materials at all times. Efficient blogs do just that, and that’s the main reason they’re so successful.

The dynamics of blogging are well suited to marketing ventures, because blogs can provide a lot of useful information and attract a lot of interest from consumers.

The perfect blog for online marketing has:

· Lots of new, unique materials- This is top quality information value for users, and it’s been the basis of every successful blog in every industry. Specialist information, reviews by experts, insights from industry insiders and analyses with useful product information are typical of the world’s best blogs.

· Consumer values reflected in information- Information about products often needs “translation” into consumer-usable information. Techno-language tends to turn people off, as do the gushing hype reviews and other much too obvious advertising-based content types.

· Materials targeted to specific users- Please note that this element is critically important for marketing purposes. The best marketing blogs really are true goldmines of information for their users. They concentrate on specific products and market situations. They provide helpful FAQs, a strong knowledge base, and current news, simultaneously.

· Good interaction with users- The best blogs have good forums and are often extremely popular as a result. The interactions with users also allow for very productive exchange of information among core product users, which is an extremely valuable asset for the blog.

Creating a Marketing blog

If you’re thinking that your blog is just a few articles and some archives, and that you’d have a hard time matching this profile, don’t give up on doing a marketing blog just yet. Creating a good marketing blog isn’t as hard as it looks.

As a matter of fact, the best marketing blogs are the products of motivated bloggers. These blogs are usually geared to the blogger’s areas of interest. These are areas where the blogger really is an enthusiastic expert. That’s good business practice, too, because it means your marketing blog is based on a strong knowledge base. You’ll know where to get information resources, and have a good eye for quality control. Therefore the quality of your blog will be excellent, based on an area in which you’re an expert.

That, interestingly enough, is the heart and soul of internet marketing- Expertise. Consumers looking for products and services go looking for expert advice and information created by experts. It’s why the marketing blogs, which provide very high quality information, are such successful marketers. That’s what “information” means to consumers, online, and that’s what sells.

Get the mix of product and information values right, and your blog will be extremely successful. Share your thoughts.
