Social Media With the increase in technology, the development of smartphones, Wi-Fi hotspots and 3G networking and amazing cellular and internet service providers, staying connected is not a problem anymore. One can just whip out their phone and browse a website, get information regarding products, check prices, facts and figures.

This increasing connectivity to the internet has led to the development of social media and networking sites which are basically a way for people to connect to each other on the internet. They can share their information and get information regarding others with ease. However, this increasing trend of social networking has led to many arguments. Are they what they seem? Are they really useful or are they just a waste of time? Do we really need them or can we ignore them without any impact on our lives?

Looking at the cons one can say that social media sites are waste of time. People can end up wasting unlimited amounts of time on them without realizing it. Secondly, these sites have been known to be haven for online lurkers. They can also be said to be an invasion of privacy where these lurkers can get access to private pictures and confidential information. One can never really be sure of when their information can get compromised.

One of the greatest things going against social websites is that they can lead to social awkwardness in real life as people get more used to interacting with others over the internet and then cannot do so well in real life. People who avoid each other in real life are supposedly ‘friends’ on these sites.

However, despite all these shortcomings, social media sites also have many advantages. First of all, one can connect to long lost friends, people who live far or have moved away, but you still want them in your life. Secondly, it is a great way to share your information, pictures and favorite moments with your loved ones. A picture or video can transmit the emotions that your relatives cannot experience with you.

One can also share their ideas or the things they love through these websites. There one can then have a healthy debate and share opinions and increase their knowledge. One can speedily be connected with someone without having to look up their number or asking others for it.

In short, social media sites are something that we can definitely live without, but they have made life more convenient and easy, so they just make you more comfortable and more aware of your friends and family.

  1. Until someone figures out how to cram more than 24 hours into a day, people have a limited amount of time. Most of us don’t spend 100 percent of it on the Internet. And we don’t devote all of the time we do spend on the Net to social networking.

  2. Hi Lawmacs,

    I love your blog…

Social media sites is what young individual can’t live without today. Maybe there are some reasons behind, and one of this is communicating with their love ones everywhere around the world.

    Please keep posting!

    Ali 🙂

    1. I must disagree with you. I can live without social media websites and I can live very well, but my business is dead without them, so what I am trying to say is that they are a necessary evil.

  3. Social media is a powerful communication media.smartphones, Wi-Fi hotspots and 3G networking and amazing cellular and internet all are connecting people.

  4. I am in support of social media though I agree its been too much in recent times. Earlier, we had a lot of time but only few social sites but the scenario has completely changed in recent times where now we have so many social sites but little time to spend on the same. Yes..social sites are required and it is a waste for those who do not have an understanding of the same, those who do not know how to make best use of the same for one’s benefit. Social Media success is all about being interesting and unique. For me, it is a platform for relationship building which is my primary motto and believe me, it does help a lot in building your online reputation…!

  5. I have my personal opinion that if I will get superpower someday, I will vanish-up 2 things 1 Social Network and 2nd Cricket. Because both are complete time waster.

  6. Social media is a powerful communication media.smartphones, Wi-Fi hotspots and 3G networking and amazing cellular. i like this………….

  7. I think this blog post misses the point of social media completely as it corners the validity of social media in the context of whether or not it’s “useful”. The more important discussion would be about why social media became such a huge part of the internet in the first place—and that answer is simple: we are social beings. Before social media the internet “connected” us through slow mediums of e-mail and instant messaging that required a user to be online at the same time as another. This kind of internet usage, while connecting us all to the same webspace, was really an isolated experience sprinkled with sparse interactions. This is why chatroom rooms were so popular before social media—now chatrooms are dead and so is AOL. Now with mobile platforms, social media has simply become what the internet was ALWAYS going to develop into: a mirror image of our physical social lives.

Please take the time to visit my blog. All the best.

  8. We were up and running even before these social media sites have boomed. It was mentioned here that social media is used to connect with other people. That being said, it can be used by businesses as some sort of an upgraded version of the traditional word of mouth advertisement technique. It can also be used as a way to gather a lot of information that could be used to help improve a product or a service. An SEO reseller would sometimes use it as a way to see how the competition is doing in the social networking aspect. Any business can also do the same, just to be able to track how exactly the target market is behaving.

  9. Social media is a powerful communication media.Social Media success is all about being interesting and unique. It is a platform for connecting to number of people.social media is must.

  10. Now a days, social media sites plays a major role in internet marketing. It is a good source of traffic. Facebook is good social media site, we can share what is on our mind, pictures or videos with our loved ones. These sites helps users to keep in touch with their friends, family or relatives.

  11. Hi Lawmacs,

Personally – If we are living in a Digital Time and age and want to be social on some kind of digital platform where you can reach across international boarders and daylight savings time – then YES! Social Media Sites are here to stay – though I see the chance to connect and utilize these channels as an area that can still change and improve – who knows, maybe in a year or two, everything socially will be done wirelessly. Only time can tell.

  12. Social media sites are very useful to increase visitors and get traffic to our website. They will help to get business. They will help to promote our business. They are very important.

  13. I personally think social media is a waste of time for me as all these useless and worthless comments I got under my profile are written by people that spend too much time on Facebook just for writing comments. Here, on this blog I can read professional opinions from people that understand each other and know what they talk about. I like a specific kind of people, not all of them 🙂

  14. As with most things the power of the social media sites depends on how you use it. You can definitely spend ages on them and waste many hours, but you can also spend 15-30 minutes on them and use them to build powerful connections and business deals too.

  15. I personally think social media is a waste of time for me as all these useless and worthless comments I got under my profile are written by people that spend too much time on Facebook just for writing comments.

  16. I personally think that something new and better will come along… I’m just not sure what that will be yet. I can see Facebook suffering the same fate of Myspace. All the issues with privacy, how they track everything and optimising the site for advetising at the exepense of user experience will be it’s downfall.

  17. Hi
Definitely social media sites are very useful to business men for promoting sales, introduce their brands and etc. i have lot of friends in facebook, they help to me personally and my profession too. so social media sites are most important in now a days.

  18. Of course we need social media websites.. if you want to connect to as big an audience as possible, social media sites are a must.. they are really great for inbound marketing techniques

  19. Social media is a powerful communication media.Social Media success is all about being interesting and unique. It is a platform for connecting to number of people.social media is must.

  20. I have to disagree with the following:

“People can end up wasting unlimited amounts of time on them without realizing it.”

I’ve tried occupying myself on facebook and twitter and the longest I’ve been able to stay on those sites without getting incredibly bored was an hour before I found myself wishing someone would post something interesting and worthwhile.

  21. Obv. we need Social media, My morning starts by loging in to social media, and i sleep with social media, so basic from morning to night it would stay ups with me
So big Yessssss, I need Them.

  22. This increasing connectivity to the internet has led to the development of social media and networking sites which are basically a way for people to connect to each other on the internet

  23. If you have a business, products, or services, then it is definitely good to start your social media presence. It can boost your online reputation and could eventually generate more revenue than just doing traditional advertising.
